Cosmetic Packaging MOQ: Why 10,000–12,000 Pcs, and How to Order Less

Yunshan Packaging makeup packaging range — lipstick case, lip gloss tube, mascara bottle and cushion compact

Almost every week a brand asks us the same question: can we start with 1,000 or 3,000 pieces instead of 10,000 or 12,000? The honest answer is usually not at the standard price — and it is worth knowing exactly why, because the number is not a sales tactic.

Yunshan Packaging is a cosmetic packaging manufacturer in Dongguan, China. We make lip gloss and lipstick tubes, mascara, sticks, jars, compacts and bottles by injection molding, and we decorate and assemble them in the same building. Because every order is made in your colour and with your logo, we do not hold stock — which is where the MOQ question comes from.

Why custom cosmetic packaging starts at 10,000–12,000 pieces

Injection-moulded items start at 12,000 pieces; AS/PE extruded tubes start at 10,000. The two figures exist because the two processes carry different start-up costs.

Four costs sit behind the number, and none of them scale down with the order.

1. The machine has to run for days to pay for itself

An injection molding machine needs two to three days of running before a job is profitable. Below the minimum, the press is still settling when the order ends — you pay for the start-up and get very few parts out of it.

2. Every decoration process has its own minimum

Pantone colour matching, spray coating, electroplating and silk screen printing are separate processes, often at separate suppliers. Each one has a minimum of its own. A custom colour on 2,000 pieces can cost more in set-up than in parts.

3. The work is paid by the piece

Assembly, printing and inspection are piece-rate. Rates are built for a clean run at volume; a short run pays the same preparation for far fewer units, on both sides.

4. Set-up loss is the same either way

First-off samples, colour trials, scrap and machine purge cost roughly the same on 3,000 pieces as on 12,000. Spread over fewer units, every part carries more of it.

Two ways to order below the MOQ

For new clients, and for new projects from existing clients, we handle small runs in one of two ways.

Option 1 — a higher unit price on the smaller quantity

The shortfall is absorbed into the piece price. Simple to compare, and no separate invoice line.

Option 2 — the MOQ price, plus a set-up charge

You keep the volume price and pay a one-off USD 200–500 for the extra cost of the short run: machine time, colour matching, decoration set-up. On a decorated item this is often the cheaper route.

We offer both as support rather than as a standard channel, and we will tell you which one gives you the lower total before you commit.

When a small run is the right call

A first launch, a colour test before scaling, a market trial in one country, or a gift set with mixed components — these are all cases where paying a little more per piece is cheaper than holding stock you cannot sell.

It is the wrong call when the unit price decides the project, or when the design can be built from an existing mould and a standard colour. In that case the honest advice is to start at MOQ.

Who you will be working with

I am Lisa Lee, founder of Yunshan Packaging. Our team of thirty works out of a 5,000 m² factory with ten production lines, and my job in the first conversation is simple: tell you whether your order size works, and what the cheapest honest route to your launch is.

That is the difference from a trading company quoting from a catalogue. We answer in the numbers that decide a project — wall thickness, decoration tolerance, filling compatibility, MOQ, tooling cost — and we answer before you spend money on tooling, not after.

One project lead carries your order from the first sample to the last carton. When something is not possible, you hear it early.

Send the quantity you actually need

Tell us the product type, the quantity you have in mind, your target price and the decoration you want. We will reply with the MOQ per item and the two options above, so you can see the real cost of a smaller first order.

Questions we get asked

What does MOQ mean in packaging?

Minimum order quantity — the smallest run a factory can produce at a workable price, set by machine start-up, decoration minimums and piece-rate work.

Can I start with 1,000 to 3,000 pieces?

Yes, through one of the two arrangements above. Expect a higher unit price or a set-up charge; the components are the same.

Is the MOQ the same for every item?

No. It depends on the part, the mould and the decoration. We quote it per item instead of giving one number that would be wrong for half of them.
